Boardwalk Memoir, Queens West, NYC
The old and new worlds emerge from the twilight horizon at Gantry Plaza State Park, in Queens, New York, not far from where I grew up. The Pepsi-Cola sign is an icon-relic of an era when companies like Pepsi, the Silver Cup bakery, Swingline Stapler based their operations in the area. This sign was saved, but the building it sat atop made way for new developments on the waterfront.
I have a true reverence for this skyline sanctuary, an intersection of personal and collective memory. As I trace these ellipses, I somehow become a part of the image; buildings, waterfront, boardwalk.
